The first to call Des Plaines home were the Potawatomi, Ottawa, and Chippewa Indians prior to the arrival of the first settlers from the East in the mid 1800s. Pioneers from New England began farming. German immigrants arrived in large numbers, looking seeking cheap, fertile land and political freedom. The Village was changed to match with the name of its station 10 years later.
